Doom's attacks curse enemy heroes. After 2.5s, the cursed hero bursts with a pillar of fire, damaging itself and all units in a 66 AoE for 10% of the damage taken from Doom during the curse. The damage and radius of the curse is 66% stronger if the enemy's level is a multiple of 6.
Also applies to all attacks when Doom is at max level.

Strategy
Bonus gold from Devour is granted at the end of the Devour cycle and you will lose it if you die. Avoid dying when a creep is being Devoured for bonus gold.
Once you get
Blink Dagger, try to make use of it immediately before your opponents see it in your inventory. It will usually result in a free kill off your ultimate.
Once you have
Blink Dagger, you want to Devour Centaur Conqueror and obtain War Stomp to disable opponents after Blinking on top of them as another disable given to your hero.
Avoid showing yourself at the start of the fight and wait for your Doom priority target to show.
Avoid fighting while Doom is on cooldown. Notify your teammates about its cooldown and push out lanes or play defensively.
Check opponents' inventories for
Linken's Sphere and
Lotus Orb. Be careful not to drop Doom on those as it will be blocked and wasted.
Look to use Devour as frequently as possible on lane creeps or neutral creeps to keep getting gold and XP.
Counter Strategy
Doom is a weak laner at lower levels. Pressure him early on.
Doom's ultimate has long cooldown. Look to play aggressively when it is down.
Linken's Sphere, status resistance items and
Lotus Orb are good at dealing with Doom's ultimate.
Acquiring Aegis for your core is a good way of dealing with Doom's ultimate. Look to kill
Roshan.
Until Doom's level 25 mute talent, you can still use your own items to kite or escape while Doomed. You can even use
Town Portal Scroll when Doomed.
