Strategy
Try to get level 2 before your opponent and go for a kill with your support. Chaos knight has good kill potential with levels. Try to catch enemies that are alone in 2 versus 1 trades.
Try to have chaos strike maxed by level 7 as it is your main tool for farming and will help with burst early. It also provides you with critical lifesteal to not have to go back to base while farming.
Use Phantasm off cooldown not just to fight but also to farm faster unless you suspect a fight will happen soon. Prioritize Ancient creeps whenever possible with Phantasm usage.
Illusions scale with stat attributes, attack speed and movement speed increases, health regeneration and some attack modifiers like lifesteal and crit.
Phantasmagoria makes your Phantasm illusions into strong illusions so they can't be instantly killed with hex, dagon or drains.
Try to target and burst enemy supports and save heroes at the start of fights. Your illusions will generally be killed off as the fight continues.
With Blink Dagger you can use Phantasm, blink in and pull illusions on target by using Reality Rift. Catch the important backline heroes with this like Sniper and Oracle.
Counter Strategy
Chaos Strike sustains Chaos Knight. Deal bursts of damage to him in lane so he can't hit creeps easily and regain HP. Keep him low all the time.
Chaos Knight's Phantasm applies a basic dispel on cast.
Either kills his illusions in the fights or disengage. Kite him around with slows and disables and keep distance from his Reality Rift.
Items that deal AoE damage and AOE disables are good against Chaos Knight's illusions. Look to buy items like Gleipnir for AOE disable.
Crimson Guard and armor items are good at offsetting Chaos Knight's physical damage output.
Lore
The veteran of countless battles on a thousand worlds, Chaos Knight hails from a far upstream plane where the fundamental laws of the universe have found sentient expression. Of all the ancient Fundamentals, he is the oldest and most tireless, endlessly searching out a being he knows only as "The Light." Long ago the Light ventured out from the progenitor realm, in defiance of the first covenant. Now Chaos Knight shifts from plane to plane, always on the hunt to extinguish the Light wherever he finds it. A thousand times he has snuffed out the source, and always he slides into another plane to continue his search anew.
Upon his steed Armageddon he rides, wading into battle with maniacal frenzy, drawing strength from the disorder of the universe. A physical manifestation of chaos itself, in times of need he calls upon other versions of himself from other planes, and together these dark horsemen ride into battle, as unstoppable as any force of nature. Only when the last Light of the world is scoured from existence will the search be ended. Where rides the Chaos Knight, death soon follows.
