Strategy
Turning into courier form with Mischief allows you to sneak up to opponents or snipe their couriers in the base. The opponents can't see you on minimap.
A well timed Mischief allows you to dodge the damage coming from attacks and spells but not the debuffs coming with that spell or attack.
Consider skilling Boundless Strike on level 1 to secure ranged creep last hit if you do not see yourself getting Jingu Mastery stacks up.
Acquiring Jingu stacks or a threat of getting them is the way Monkey King wins the lane.
Orb of Frost and early
Boots of Speed help with that.
If the lane is rough consider putting more points in Tree Dance for creep clearing and work on solving mana issues to be able to spam it.
Many spells and items can cut trees you are standing on, including those coming from your allies. Be careful about that.
Pillar and Tinker wards as well as spells that provide flying vision when used, can spot you standing on the trees.
You should skip skilling Wukong's Command on level 6 in most games as it is hard to keep opponents inside of it early on.
Channeling Wukong's command from a tree will make you drop down from it without being stunned. You can jump back on any tree inside the ultimate ring and it will keep going.
To get a good Wukong's Command, ideally channel it from a tree or outside of vision of enemy heroes and follow up with Boundless Strike.
Items that modify attacks or have proc chance - except for
Skull Basher - will work on Monkey King soldiers.
Counter Strategy
Monkey King is one of the strongest laners against melee heroes, as it is easy for him to get Jingu Mastery stacks up. Ranged heroes have better time against him in general as he has low armor and simple right clicks tend to do good work
Early
Boots of Speed or even a
Wind Lace are advisable for melee cores against Monkey King
Be careful on initial bounty runes as Monkey might come from behind while under the effect of Mischief (as courier). You can't see him on the minimap while under the effect of Mischief. He also doesn't aggro towers while Mischiefed so he might even run into your base and snipe couriers
Prevent Monkey King from getting four stacks of Jingu Mastery. But if it happens avoid staying in one line for multi-hero Boundless Strike
Melee cores should avoid laning directly against Monkey King. Try to hijack, skip or pull creeps
Cutting trees that Monkey King stands on stuns him for 4 seconds. Having a quelling blade or a tree cutting ability is very useful against him
Break effects are good at reducing Monkey Kings' damage output and
Spirit Vessel reduces healing from Jingu Mastery stacks
Monkey King's ultimate grants him bonus armor and he therefore takes little physical damage. Dealing magical and pure damage is the priority. If Monkey King uses
Black King Bar, you should not fight him inside Wukong's Command ring
Items and abilities that force Monkey King out of his ultimate are valuable
