Attacks from Beastmaster or a nearby unit he controls will cause him bang his drum, dealing damage to nearby units and healing Beastmaster and units under his control for a portion of the damage dealt. Every attack decreases the interval between drum hits down to a minimum of 0.5s between hits after 20 attacks. If no attacks are made, the intervals gradually increase.

Strategy
If laning against Chen, Enchantress or Crystal Maiden, consider not summoning Boars as they deal with summons easily.
Make sure not to feed boars to opponents. Deny them or move them away when they're low on hp.
Keep the hawk out to always have a form of lockdown on enemy heroes close to you.
Utilize Beasmaster's high base damage and additional damage from boars to deny creeps and secure last hits.
Make use of catapult waves to pressure the tower along with your summons.
The biggest early powerspike on Beastmaster is Arcane Boots and level 6 timing. Look to score a kill and take down the enemy tower.
You can farm aggressively since you have hawk's root to protect you and summons to farm those camps safely.
Push out side lanes with summons, especially if you have an ancient creep with Helm of the Overlord. Black Dragon helps the most with that.
Take first Roshan between 15 and 20 minute mark.
Counter Strategy
Beastmaster's boars give a lot of gold and experience. Look to kill them.
Be aware of Beastmasters level 6 and Helm of the Dominator powerspike if he is not going for Aghanims Scepter.
Defend towers against Beastmaster. Otherwise he will invade your jungle after taking towers.
Gank Beastmaster with smoke as you get more gold if you kill his summons too.
Consider buying a Crimson Guard and armor items against Beastmaster.
Lotus Orb and Linken's Sphere are good at countering Beastmaster's Primal Roar.
Beastmaster lineups are good at taking early Roshan. Ward around Roshan pit and keep check.
Avoid walking up to Beastmaster on your own as you might get rooted by hawks and then roared to your death.
Lore
Karroch was born a child of the stocks. His mother died in childbirth; his father, a farrier for the Last King of Slom, was trampled to death when he was five. Afterward Karroch was indentured to the king's menagerie, where he grew up among all the beasts of the royal court: lions, apes, fell-deer, and things less known, things barely believed in. When the lad was seven, an explorer brought in a beast like none before seen. Dragged before the King in chains, the beast spoke, though its mouth moved not. Its words: a plea for freedom. The King only laughed and ordered the beast perform for his amusement; and when it refused, struck it with the Mad Scepter and ordered it dragged to the stocks.
Over the coming months, the boy Karroch sneaked food and medicinal draughts to the wounded creature, but only managed to slow its deterioration. Wordlessly, the beast spoke to the boy, and over time their bond strengthened until the boy found he could hold up his end of a conversation. He could, in fact, speak now to all the creatures of the King's menagerie. On the night the beast died, a rage came over the boy. He incited the animals of the court to rebel and threw open their cages to set them amok on the palace grounds. The Last King was mauled in the mayhem. In the chaos, one regal stag bowed to the boy who had freed him; and with Beastmaster astride him, leapt the high walls of the estate, and escaped. Now a man, Karroch the Beastmaster has not lost his ability to converse with wild creatures. He has grown into a warrior at one with nature's savagery.
